Administer a data communications network

Version 1.0
Issue Date: May 2024

Qualification -
Unit of Competency ICTTEN511 - Administer a data communications network
Description
Employability Skills
Learning Outcomes and Application This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to establish and configure a data communications network, maintain systems and applications, administer user accounts and diagnose and isolate system faults. It applies to individuals working as technical staff who administer a local area network (LAN) or wide area network (WAN). They may make use of enterprise procedures and flow charts, and third party test routines analysing performance and functionality of a live data communications network. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Gather evidence to demonstrate consistent performance in conditions that are safe and replicate the workplace. Noise levels, production flow, interruptions and time variances should be typical of those experienced in the telecommunications networks engineering field of work and include access to:

sites where communications network and systems user accounts can be administered

equipment currently used in industry

relevant regulations and company policies impacting communications network activities.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.

6.1 Implement system integrity and system monitoring techniques to provide a reliable customer data network

6.2 Use diagnostic software to detect and isolate system faults

6.3 Produce a report on network performance and fault occurrence for the customer, with recommendations for improving the integrity of the data communications network

Evidence of ability to:

establish and configure a data communications network

set up and maintain systems, facilities, applications, and software

administer user accounts

diagnose and isolate system faults.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

determine features and operating requirements of data communications software and hardware for network systems

outline manufacturer’s requirements of testing software and equipment

summarise test methods and performance requirements

describe typical issues and challenges that occur when administering a data communications network.
